1. Reviewers Wanted for European Union Grant Proposals
(from Physics Today)
At the beginning of 2014, the European Union (EU) launched a new 7-year funding program, Horizon 2020 (see thisPhysics Today article). There is a continuous need for experts to review funding proposals, including astronomers and physicists. If you are interested, please register through the Experts area on the Horizon 2020 Participant Portal.
Reviewers receive a fee for days spent reviewing, both at home and at committee meetings in Brussels, and are reimbursed for travel costs. Being an expert evaluator also is a great way to find out what makes a successful proposal. Experts of any nationality and working anywhere in the world are welcome.
In addition, participation in EU-funded projects is open to researchers from all over the world, though participants from industrialized countries outside the EU are not automatically eligible to receive EU funding. For more information, see theHorizon 2020 page on international cooperation.

3. Hoy, Mayo 1 @6:30 pm, Seminario organizado por la Asociación Cultural Española:
To our Science and Education Seminar Series highlighting the work and research of Spanish and Latin American professionals / Seminarios de Ciencia y Educación destacando el trabajo e investigación de profesionales Españoles y Latino Americanos
Topic/Título: How the brain creates the reality: illusions, perception and movement / Como el cerebro crea la realidad: ilusión, percepción y movimiento.
Presenter/Ponente: Professor Javier Cudeiro Mazaira, Professor of Physiology, Neuroscience and Motor Control Laboratory (NEUROcom), University of Coruña – Visiting Professor at the Berenson-Allen Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard University.
Abstract/Resumen: Since Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal laid down the foundations of neuroscience, we have learned that our actions, our emotions, all we are, is a result of the activity of millions of nerve cells that make up our brain. The world around us and the reality we observe are merely a reflection of neuronal activity, because the brain, millisecond by millisecond, creates reality. In the creative process sometimes external reality and neural creations do not match, and the brain seems to deceive us.
